Library Recommendations: June 2008

Of all the game products, Wizards (and TSR before them) have experimented most with the adventure format. Typically adventures were soft-back and stapled, much like a pamphlet or a commercial magazine, which it most resembled. However, there have been occasional experiments in packaging, such as boxed sets, flip charts, and even in hardback books.

It looks like, for the 4th edition, we have a variant on the “magazine format,” which includes pockets in the covers. I’ve heard criticism that the pockets do not hold up very well. I have not yet seen them for myself.

Beyond the packaging, I have to admit that Wizards has some excellent creative writers handling these first adventures. The first three (H 1-3) taken with the second three (P1-3) seem to take characters from 1st level up to the 20th level. This is good news for the novice DM who would like hand holding the first time out and for more experienced DMs who comb adventures for ideas to use in their own home-made adventures.

While I have high hopes for this series of adventures, the price and suspect packaging make it hard to recommend them for libraries that plan to circulate them. If the pockets rip open, is there anything else to hold it together? I don’t know. So I can’t recommend this product to libraries that plan to circulate them.

However, if a library plans on having a reference set, something kept for in-house play, then they might want to consider picking up the first adventure Keep on the Shadowfell and see how well it is received. At least with in-house play only, if the packaging falls apart you can slip it into pocket folders for the next group of gamers to use.

Dungeons and Dragons 3.0 and 3.5 were heavily supported by monthly free games available from the Wizard’s website. I cannot tell at this time if that tradition is going to continue.
